Grounding in AI refers to the process where AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity access real-time data from live web sources rather than relying solely on pre-trained knowledge, ensuring responses are accurate, up-to-date, and context-aware.

It is the bridge between a model guessing based on old data and a model knowing the truth because it just looked it up. For those of us in the industry, this is the shift from fighting for ten blue links to fighting to be the single trusted source cited by a machine.

I have been doing this for fifteen years. I have seen updates that people claimed would kill SEO more times than I have had hot dinners. Panda. Penguin. The mobile shift. Every single time the panic sets in.

But this feels different. We are not just optimizing for a search engine anymore. We are optimizing for an answer engine that might not even want to send us traffic.

It is a strange time to be an SEO. The ground is moving under our feet.

But we adapt. We always do. That is the job.

What actually is grounding in simple terms

Think of a standard Large Language Model (LLM) as a very smart professor who has been locked in a library basement since 2023. If you ask him about the French Revolution he gives you a brilliant essay.

However, if you ask him about the weather today or the latest iPhone release he starts hallucinating. He makes things up because he literally cannot see the outside.

Grounding is unlocking the door. It is giving that professor a smartphone. Now when you ask a question he can say “Hold on let me check.” He retrieves external data, digests it, and integrates it into his answer.

This process is often called Retrieval-Augmented Generation or RAG. It is the backbone of tools like Google Vertex AIand it is what keeps these models from lying to your face.

For us, this distinction is critical. Non-grounded answers cannot be influenced by SEO. They are locked in the training data black box. You can’t optimize for them unless you have a time machine.

Grounded answers, however, are fair game. Because the AI is looking at live web sources it means it is looking at us. Or at least it is looking at the sites it trusts.

The game has switched from “rank my page” to “cite my facts.”

It seems simple enough but the execution is messy.

How Google decides when to use grounding

You might assume that Google grounds every query now. Why wouldn’t they? It makes the answers better. But they don’t. The reason is money. Computing power costs a fortune.

Running a live search, fetching the content, reading it, and synthesizing an answer is computationally expensive. It adds latency too. Users hate waiting.

I read a fascinating technical breakdown by Dejan.ai recently that explained this. Google uses dynamic thresholds to decide when to trigger grounding. They look at the query and ask if it needs fresh data.

If I search “Who is the Prime Minister of the UK?” that needs grounding because British politics is chaotic and it changes often. If I search “How to tie a tie” that does not need grounding. The method hasn’t changed.

This selective grounding is important for your strategy. If you are trying to use AI SEO tactics on evergreen content that never changes you might be wasting your time. The model relies on its internal memory for that.

The opportunity lies in the queries where freshness, accuracy, and nuance are required. Comparisons. Reviews. News. Complex problems.

I think this is where a lot of agencies get it wrong. They try to apply the same strategy to everything.

You have to pick your battles.

The mechanics of becoming a trusted source

So how do we get the AI to pick us? It is not about stuffing keywords anymore. I mean keywords still matter but not in the way they used to. It is about becoming a source of truth that is easy for a machine to read.

Structure is your best friend here. I have seen beautiful websites with lovely prose that get completely ignored by AI because the facts are buried in flowery language. The AI wants data. It wants a table. It wants a list.

Grounding Pages has some interesting standards on this but the principle is universal. Make it machine-readable.

If you are writing a review of a software product don’t just write a long paragraph about the pricing. Create a table. Label it clearly. “Price: $50.” “Monthly Cost: $10.” The AI can grab that and stick it in a summary.

If you hide it in a sentence like “We found that the pricing structure was generally affordable at around fifty bucks,” the AI might miss it or misinterpret it.

Clarity is the new optimization.

Also we need to talk about authority. The AI is terrified of hallucinations. It wants to be right. So it prioritizes sources that have high domain trust.

If you are a small site you can still win but you have to be hyper-specific. You can’t beat the big guys on general knowledge. But you can beat them on specific, niche expertise where you are the only one with the real data.

It is about being the only person in the room who actually knows the answer.

Optimizing for the backend query

This is a concept that took me a while to get my head around. When a user talks to an AI they use natural language. “I want to buy a cheap car for my family of five for weekend trips.” That is the user prompt.

But that is not what the AI searches for.

The AI takes that prompt and breaks it down into backend queries. It might search for “best 7-seater SUVs under 20k,” “reliable family cars 2026,” and “boot space for camping gear.”

It runs these searches in the background to gather the info it needs to answer the user.

To win at grounding you need to anticipate these backend queries. You need to understand the user persona so well that you know what the AI will have to look up to satisfy them. It is almost like reverse-engineering the thought process of a robot. Which sounds dystopian when I say it out loud.

Cover the whole topic. Not just the surface.

The traffic problem and why I worry

I am going to be honest with you. I am skeptical about where this leads for publishers. Tom Critchlow wrote something that stuck with me about how Google is grounding itself with an experience that reduces clicks out to the web. They are relentlessly summarizing.

If the AI gives the user the perfect answer grounded in your data why would the user click your link? They got what they wanted. You did the work. Google got the credit. It is the zero-click problem on steroids.

We might be moving toward a future where traffic volumes drop significantly. We might see sessions plummet. But there is a flip side.

The traffic that does click through? That traffic is highly qualified. They are the ones who wanted more than the summary. They are the ones who want to read the full story.

So perhaps we stop chasing vanity metrics. We stop caring about getting a million eyeballs and start caring about getting the right thousand. It is a nice thought to comfort yourself with when the graphs are pointing down.

But it is scary. I won’t lie.

Practical steps to take right now

Okay enough doom and gloom. What can you actually do on a Tuesday morning to fix this? I have a checklist I run through for clients.

First, audit your content for “fluff.” If your article takes 500 words to get to the point the AI has already left. Put the answer at the top. We call it BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front). If the question is “Is X better than Y?” start the article with “Yes, X is better than Y because…” Then explain why.

Second, use schema markup like your life depends on it. Because it might. Schema is how you hand-feed the robot. If you have a product, mark it up. If you have a review, mark it up.

Make it impossible for the AI to misunderstand what you are saying. It is tedious work but it is neccessary if you want to be cited.

Third, verify your facts. This sounds obvious but you would be amazed how much garbage is on the web. ChatGPT and other models cross-reference. If you say the sky is green and Wikipedia says it is blue you lose.

Grounding is about accuracy. If you are consistently factually accurate you build trust with the model.

It is about building a reputation for not talking nonsense.

Understanding hallucinations and trust

We touched on this but it deserves its own section. Hallucinations are the biggest problem AI companies face. Ezinsights.ai notes that grounding is the primary solution to this. It is the safety net.

When an AI hallucinates it damages the brand of the company that made it. Google does not want Gemini telling people to eat rocks. So they are desperate for trusted sources.

This is your leverage. If you can prove that you are a safe pair of hands the algorithm will favor you.

This means you need to cite your own sources. Link out to authoritative places. Show your work. If you make a claim back it up. The AI looks for these signals of credibility. It is essentially doing what a good journalist does but at the speed of light.

I think we sometimes forget that these models are designed to mimic human reasoning. They look for the same things we do. Does this look legit? Is the author a real person? Is the site broken?

Basic SEO hygiene still applies. A slow site is still a bad site.

The shift to conversational SEO

People don’t search with keywords anymore. They search with problems. “My car is making a weird noise when I turn left” is a very different search from “car mechanic.”

Grounding activates heavily on these conversational queries because they are complex. The AI has to understand the nuance. It has to figure out what “weird noise” means. It might look for forums or Reddit threads or detailed technical guides.

This is where user-generated content & forums are seeing a resurgence. But for a brand it means you need to write content that speaks like a human. Answer the specific, weird, long-tail questions. Don’t be afraid to get really granular. The AI loves granular.

I have a client who sells obscure plumbing parts. We stopped writing generic “plumbing tips” articles and started writing about specific error codes on specific boiler models.

Traffic went up. Grounding citations went up. Because when someone asks the AI about that error code we are the only ones with the answer.

Be the specialist. The generalist is dead.

Tools and the ecosystem

You can’t ignore the tools. Thrillax mentions a few but you need to be aware of the whole ecosystem. Microsoft has Azure AI. Google has Vertex. OpenAI is doing its thing.

These platforms are offering grounding as a service to enterprises. Companies are connecting their own private data to these models. This is a side note but if you are in B2B SEO you need to think about how your content appears inside these private instances too. It is a whole other can of worms.

But for the public web it is mostly about Google and Bing. They are the gatekeepers. If you are optimized for them you are generally safe.

Just keep an eye on Perplexity. It is small but it is aggressive and it cites sources very clearly. It is a good model for seeing what the future might look like.

I use it sometimes just to see if my content shows up. It is a good ego check.

Adapting your agency mindset

If you work in an agency like I do you know that selling this to clients is hard. They want to see a ranking report. They want to see position one. Telling them “you are being cited by the AI” sounds vague. It sounds like an excuse.

We have to change the metrics we report on. We have to look at share of voice in AI answers. It is harder to track. There are no perfect tools for it yet. We are kind of flying blind & hoping for the best.

But the alternative is irrelevance. If we stick to the old ways we die. I have seen too many good SEOs refuse to adapt because they liked the old rules. The old rules were fun. You could game them.

You can’t really game this. You just have to be better.

You have to be the signal in the noise.

Final Thoughts

I walked into the office this morning and looked at a SERP and it looked completely different to how it looked six months ago. That is the reality of our job. Grounding in AI is just the latest layer of complexity on top of an already complex beast.

It is exciting though. It forces us to be better content creators. We can’t get away with mediocre fluff anymore. We have to provide value. Real, tangible, checkable value.

And sure, the traffic might dip. The clicks might get harder to come by. But the internet might actually become a more useful place because of it. Or maybe it will just become a robot echo chamber. Who knows.

All I know is that I have to go fix some schema markup on a site about dog food because apparently the AI is confused about whether it is grain-free or not. And that is a relevent use of my time on a Tuesday.
